Commonwealth Power Company (“CPC”) is a domestic
Michigan corporation that owns and operates small hydroelectric projects.  CPC operates three hydroelectric plants on the Thornapple River.  The Irving hydroelectric dam is located at the intersection of McCann Road and Irving Road.  The project features an earthen dam, counter balance bypass gates, a power canal, a power canal slide gate structure and the powerhouse.  The equipment includes the turbine generator, rated for 800 hp and 600 kw per hour.  The annual generation is approximately 2,000,000 kwh per year.  A comparable coal fired generator would consume 1,670,000 pounds of coal to produce the same amount of electricity.  Pollution: oxides of sulfur, 32,900 pounds; in air pollution particulate released into the air: 99,800 pounds.  Hydroelectric air pollution = 0.  Water pollution = 0.
