The LaBarge hydroelectric dam is located at the Thornapple River where it intersects with the 84th Street Bridge in Caledonia, Michigan.  The project features an earthen embankment, an unregulated overflow spillway, and two radial flood control gates.  The powerhouse was built in 1904 and has two turbine generators.  Generator #1 is a vertical unit that is rated at 400 horsepower and 300 kilowatts per hour.  Generator #2 is a horizontal double runner turbine with a generator rated at 750 horsepower and 562 kilowatts per hour.  The combined generation capacity is 862 kilowatts per hour.  Annual generation is approximately 3,800,000 kilowatt hours per year.  A comparable coal fired generator would consume 3,180,000 pounds of coal to produce the same amount of electricity.  Pollution: oxides of sulfur, 62,200 pounds in air pollution. Particulates released into the air, 190,000 pounds.  Hydroelectric air pollution = 0.  Water pollution = 0.
